Day ONE- FIGMENT began today and so did our Picket Dream project!

What an interesting day.  We had people from all walks of life contribute- kids, teens, other artists, people visiting from Australia, an elderly woman, a school group, some Chinese tourists- everyone was very excited and thrilled to contribute to our growing fence.

As the day progressed, an interesting thing happened: the fence began to take on more and more meaning as people attributed more characteristics to it, and interpreted other people’s stakes.  Someone felt it looked like a memorial. Some people wanted to look at everyone’s dream before they wrote their own, others didn’t want to have anything to do with anyone else’s dream.

And then, a group of rowdy school boys were playing football, their ball landed inside our fence lines, and they tripped over our ropes that laid our the pattern in the grass.  We all got kind of mad, but when we asked them if they wanted to participate- a couple of them left their group and very quickly made a fence post and then went back to their game.  We all laughed- do fences really make good neighbors?!

We will continue to build, Saturday 10-6, Sunday 10-6

Stay tuned for more to come!

I came to the site today in a roundabout way, but was so pleased to come upon it when I did. The experience was harder than I thought it would be- how could I express my American Dream in a way that would fit on a fence post?! I found a way to do so, and the experience was the catalyst for wonderful conversations that lasted throughout the day. Thank you Picket Dream project!

Your installation was very striking…powerful stuff! I’ve got a photo, if you want. Here’s a link in a gallery of mine:
And I’d be happy to send you a file.
Cheers, Charles
